Description

We provide a portal for learners to access designated and requested VMs (Virtual Machines) that reside on an encrypted private tunneled virtual network for a given institution. This is a perfect environment for students to work in who wish to truly submersed in a true Linux and Windowsnetworked environment.

Imagine the learners of your instituion who are part of a networking or sysadmin course (Networking 101, Windows Active Directory, etc.) being able to actually learn by really using the operating system in a fully high-speed, virtualized and secure networked environment with both their peers and professor. Updates, installs, file transfers, security testing, logins, programming, scripting and any other computing feature you can think of – all working as they should. Below are a just a few examples of how this service can be used to enhance computer science/network related courses.

Ex 1. Student wants to test to see if they can construct a Domain Controller and have another student login or test the login from their other designated Windows/Linux VM on their own.

Ex 2. Student wants to setup a web, DNS, proxy, file/print-sharing or ftp server (Linux or Windows), and have another of their own or a peer’s VMs access it to ensure it is working correctly and effectively.

Ex 3. Instructor wants to help the class learn Linux by giving them Linux VMs that allow them to setup different servers, firewalls, etc., and allow them to interact with one another.

Ex 4. Learners/Instructor have a need to simulate a full corporate network with VPN tunneling between VMs designated as road-warrior type VMs.

With the Omnymbus EDU Virtual Network, anything is possible and there are no limits to what can be learned by both students and professors alike. Our service provides each institution with a way to better prepare students who wish to learn the true nature of advanced computing rather than purely assessing their skills based on their ability to pass a multiple choice exam. Professors can now have their students to do real-world type work from anywhere in the world.

The Omnymbus EDU Virtual Network caters heavily to distance-learning environment by not requiring any downloaded software to participate. Students never have to worry about installing Virtualbox or VMware in order to participate with the rest of the class, and institutions do not have to worry about the cost of providing a virtualized infrastructure.

The Omnymbus EDU Virtual Network is a must for institutions looking to put their students ahead of the pack and supercharge learning

FEATURES

Networking Environment

Students can operate in a true networked environment between one another, and the instructor, securely, and privately. The network itself is also virus proxied, and all vm templates are provisioned with virus software already installed. Each school is issued their own private network(s).

Students can work on projects outside of the classroom, without installing para-virtualization software on top of their own existing operating system. Anyone with a browser can participate, and the hardware they use for computing is a non-factor.

Students have the benefit of still working together in a networked environment outside of class, which means group assignments are not limited to classroom labs. Perfect for online learning.

Equal Access

Students are on equal playing fields when using the virtualized environment since there is no software to install. Which means all students experience the same speed and performance with their VMs, regardless of their local hardware.

Students also have access to “iso” files and empty vm shell(s) where they can practice installing and administrating various operating systems (i.e. Ubuntu, CentOS, Suse, Debian, Fedora, Windows 7/2008 Server, Windows XP, DOS). Though we are limiting this selection during testing.

Virtual Instruction

Instructors can view “in real time” how, and what, students are using their VMs for, in order to help them in class or monitor for progression. Simultaneous views of the same VM is possible, so the instructor can invite the learners to watch what he/she does in real time. No limit to the # of viewers.

Students/Professors can use the VM portal to request new VM templates to be spawned under their username, which are already networked and provisioned, though they must get instructor clearance first.

Support & Upgrades

VMs, if damaged from testing, can simply be replaced with a new working template upon request within 12-24 hrs.

Our web portal allows access from any modern web browser, and is HTML5/Java driven.

Under special request, multiple hard disks, and nics can be added for teaching learners computing technologies such as raid, secure file transfer, vpns, local email servers, etc…

World-class 24/7 support. What truly separates Omnymbus from Amazon, and other cloud services is the level of support. It is only an email, or phone call away for participating institutions.

Memory & Backup

VM density and dynamic memory consumption. This is simply not comparable, as our VM density per VM entity is simply unmatched. Thus there is no cost difference to burst from, for example 64MB512MB. Amazon and Azure charge for this along with RAM usage by the hour per MB; we charge for neither. Always on? No problem. Costs no more than shutting down the VM completely. Omnymbus has drastic price structure differences, and much higher performance per VM. When you are trying to serve the world, such things are impossible, but when you target just a few institutions of preference, as we have done, it can be accomplished.

VM Backup. We snapshot all VMs everyday and keep 3-7 days (depending on client) worth of retrieval at no cost to our clients; at zero costs. The VM can be restored anytime within that range. This is a Priceless attribute of our service and one that has benefited many of our clients already

Network Performance

Our VP networks are not shared, and are firewall(ed) for unilateral routing without interference, thus there is no overhead from one vm to another. And while our interface may not be as sophisticated as and hard to use as Amazons EC2 interface, it does hide the complexity of a very secure, and powerful network infrastructure which has been virtualized.

Compliancy

We meet them all, HIPAA included, along with storage compliances such as NIST, PCI, SAS 70, etc. This is not the case with Amazon or Azure as they do not preconfigure the networks or storage to hold such compliancies, the user must do this. We have it set from the start.

Flexibility

We are a lot smaller than Amazon, and Azure, which means we can customize our offerings per client, where need be, in order to give them as close to a perfect solution as possible. Call Amazon, or Azure, and see if this is even possible.

VPNSEC

There are three layers of security hiding the fact that the VMs even exist. We can also acquire a static IP for a client to use as a public gateway to a self managed (full) firewall that connects to their VMs using port forwarding.
